Happy Monday, babes!!! I hope you all had a beautiful weekend and are feeling refreshed and inspired for the week ahead.

A few months ago, I wrote about how I quit my job. I shared my story of why I quit and what I planned on doing next: go after the entrepreneurship route and be my own boss for the first time ever. Now, only a little over three months into it, I can honestly say I’ve learned a TON and have grown miles in the process. For those of you also interested in making that leap or for the mildly curious, I thought it would be a fun and interesting experience for all to share some of what I’ve learned and what life is really like now that my home is my office.

What Life is Like After You Make the LeapIt’s everything I imagined and nothing like I planned.

Making such a drastic change in your life, like quitting your day job to work for yourself at home all day, every day, is likely to be a bit of a shock at first. You don’t really have to “get ready” for the day, and bathroom breaks also turn into laundry and dish washing breaks. If you’re not feeling inspired, you can put off your work during the day…but may be finding yourself behind the computer later that night at 1 a.m. to play catchup. Also, the accountability thing? It’s all you. Sure, you can find accountability partners, join groups, work an afternoon at a coworking space — but at the end of the day, no one’s breathing down your back to complete a project or meet a timeline. That becomes your own responsibility to stay on top of your deadlines and keep your clients happy.

Despite the changes and adjustments, the whole situation is kind of perfect.

I honestly think it’s my mixed introvert/extrovert personality that lends itself to my work-at-home setup. I can plan my day around when I feel most inspired (I try to do as much before lunch as I can, when I’m feeling most excited and productive), and I plan meetings and coffee dates in the afternoons, when I know I’ll be less productive just sitting at the computer. Plus, that’s my chance to get out of the apartment and enjoy some face-to-face interaction with clients and friends. Evenings are spent catching up on my own business, such as working on new products, blogging and planning collaborations with other bloggers and companies.

Of course, working at home and being your own boss isn’t for everyone.

Some people genuinely find joy in the office environment and being surrounded by like-minded individuals, conquering projects together and having each others’ backs. That camaraderie and social aspect is huge, and something you don’t get to partake in as often when working for yourself at home. There’s also the ease and convenience of pay and benefits; it can clearly be a more stable situation when someone else is taking care of all of those nitty gritty details and logistics.

In fact, that’s one of the things I feared most — setting up benefits, paying myself and overall, just being able to take care of myself and make a decent living. However, I quickly learned that the excitement of running my own business and figuring out all of the pieces was a huge motivator for me. I found joy in setting up insurance, figuring out how to pay myself and my taxes…I’m an odd one here, I know. But it is totally fascinating and empowering to have some control over all of these details. And the first time you get to pay yourself out of your own business account is seriously the best feeling ever!

So, yes. There have been challenges, things to figure out, insane amounts of research and mistakes made along the way. But at the end of the day, I know I’m exactly where I need to be, doing exactly what I need to be doing.

And I’ll be the first to tell you, that the whole running your own business thing? Once you really take a look at it face to face, it’s not all that bad. If I can do it, so can you.

On that note, if you are making this transition yourself or are planning to do so in the future, I’m happy to help with your questions, thoughts and fears! And if I don’t know the answer, I’ll for sure point you in the direction of someone who will. xo
